SMB over QUIC POC

I have had the distinct pleasure of being one of the first people to implement a SMB over QUIC POC. It was in a proof of concept I did with Windows Server 2022 Azure Edition in public preview.

That was a fun and educational excercise. As a result, I learned a lot. As a result, I decided to write a lab and test guide, primarily for my own reference. But also, to share my experience with others.

I am convinded it will fill a need for people that require remote access to SMB file shares without a VPN. Next to that, the integration with the KDC proxy service make it a Kerberos integrated solution. In addition, the KDC Prosy service has the added benefit of allowing for remote password changes.

How to survive in the ever-changing IT world

How to survive in the ever-changing IT world is something that all IT professionals and developers want to figure out. No matter how junior or senior you are, no matter what level of expertise you have, it is a challenge for everyone. At least if they are honest to themselves and others.

The IT world changes at a very fast pace and longevity of technology seems to be a distant pipe dream. The only thing that has tenure it IT seems to be considered legacy and tech debt. But is that always the case? There is flip side to fast paced changes. The faster things change the shorter they last.

Today’s IT world is changing extremely rapidly in terms of technologies used, hardware and software lifecycle management, trends, and hypes. I have always said IT looks a lot like fashion-driven show business.

Everyone strives to keep up with these changes, both individuals and organizations. Can they in the end, or will we outrun ourselves? If we can at what cost? Quality, longevity, minimal viable products, bugs, journeys instead of products, etc.

The skill sets needed to make this happen are grown and groomed, not produced at will. All this while investing in education and training is often only lip service as the requirements change so fast, the willingness to do so is diminished. And as such we make our problems even bigger.

Windows Server 2022 Preview License Keys

To test the Windows Server 2022 Preview builds you need to register as a Windows Insider, log in and download the ISO or the VDHDX. With the ISO for a clean install or an upgrade, you need the Windows Server 2022 preview license keys. I have listed these below. Do note that since Windows Server 2022 Preview build 20334 those keys have changed.

As I build or upgrade some VMs in the labs weekly I decided to put these keys in a little blog post for me to find them easily. I intend to update this post if and when new keys are needed. Do not worry, these are public, so I do not break any license agreement here.

I am speaking at Experts Live Netherlands 2019

I have the distinguished honor of announcing that I am speaking at the Experts Live  Netherlands 2019 conference.
